Pump flange fitting
Why your breast pump
might not be working for you
It's not you. It's the flange. Most pumping problems — pain, poor output, frustration — trace back to a single thing that was never measured right in the first place.
The problem
One size does not fit most
Popular breast pumps are sold with only one or two flange sizes, in a single tunnel shape — and those sizes are typically too large for most people. The flange is the funnel-shaped piece that fits over your nipple, and its size and shape affect everything: comfort, suction, and how much milk you can actually remove.
An ill-fitting flange can cause nipple pain and bruising, reduced milk output, a sense that your pump "just doesn't work," and over time, a discouraged pumping parent who gives up before they wanted to.
- Most pumps ship with 24mm or 28mm flanges — but many people need 13–21mm
- Tunnel shape matters as much as size — not all nipples fit the same mold
- Material affects suction feel and comfort, especially for sensitive skin

The guessing game no new parent should have to play
You're already tired. You're learning how to keep a new baby fed, sleeping, and thriving. The last thing you need is to spend your limited time and money on a painful, ineffective pumping experience — or on buying flange after flange, waiting for shipping, testing each one, and disposing of the ones that don't work.
Most parents try to figure this out alone: reading conflicting advice online, ordering multiple sizes from multiple brands, and still not feeling confident that what they have is right. It's exhausting. And it's unnecessary.
The solution
One session. The right fit.
Instead of guessing, spend one pumping session with me. I'll assess your nipple size, shape, and tissue, trial multiple options, and help you find the flange that actually works for your body. You'll leave the appointment with the flanges that are right for you — no more shipping delays, no more trial and error.
- Over 60 flanges and inserts in different shapes, sizes, and materials to compare

A few things worth knowing
before you pump
Evidence-based flange fitting training
My flange fit training comes from Jeanette Mesite Frem, a leading expert in breast pump fitting and co-author of a peer-reviewed study on flange sizing and pumping outcomes. When I assess your fit, it's grounded in the latest research — not guesswork.
Read the study →Getting a pump through insurance
Pumps covered by insurance must be purchased through a medical device supplier — not a retail store. It's worth shopping around, because suppliers vary significantly in what they offer: the same insurance benefit can get you very different pump models, accessories, and prices depending on where you go. Some insurances also cover breast milk storage bags, so always ask.
A note on wearable pumps
Wearable pumps like the Elvie or Willow are genuinely convenient — they're great for occasional use, travel, or pumping discreetly. However, due to their many parts and the fitting challenges they introduce, they are generally not recommended as your primary pump. If you're exclusively pumping or trying to build or protect your supply, a traditional pump with a proper flange fit will usually serve you better.
